When is the best time to prune back lilac bushes??

Hey i have a bunch of Lilac bushes around my yard and they are getting pretty big and dont seem to bloom as much as be for. So I was told to prune them just not sure what time of year to do this.. Thanks for any help

When is the best time to prune back lilac bushes??
Cut them back in the early fall, but not down too much or it will kill them.Good luck
Reply:Hi, the best time to trim would be in Early spring, but partially trimming about a third off wouldn%26#039;t hurt them now. Do heavy trimming in spring time. Bye
Reply:Cut them right after they bloom. If you cut them later,you%26#039;ll be cutting off next years flowers.
Reply:now
Reply:November to January! By the time February rolls around the sap is already up in the trunk! wait until late fall or winter!
Reply:Hi,

Lilac only bloom in the spring and then remain leafy and green until fall. I was told it is best to trim the blooms as they begin to die. You can trim them back a bit throughout the summer, but for a full trim it is best to wait until fall. It will grow back nice and full in the spring.

Happy bush trimming!
Reply:Do not do it in the spring. Do it right after it blooms which is now. The new buds will soon be forming for next year.

Cut the largest branches and leave the little ones. Cutting the larger ones will encourage new runners to form. I cut mine down to eye level because my bush is not very big.

You may want to cut yours down to the ground.

Most importantly, buy and spread some lime. Its cheap.

If memory serves, I got the kind that claims to dissolve. If you can dig up the bush and fill in with lime so it gets directly on the roots that%26#039;s best. The lime will help the lilac bloom better.

I just put the lime on top and dug it up a little and am hoping for the best.

I am told you can%26#039;t give these things to much lime so use it liberally.
