Is there an animal that will dig up and eat my lilac bush roots?

My mother came over about 3 weeks ago and planted 4 cuttings from her French Lilac bushes at my house. About a week after they were planted I noticed the soil around the base of all transplants was disturbed. A few days after that I found holes had been dug around the roots and one was missing.

Is there an animal that likes to eat the roots of the lilac bush or was one of my neighbors trying to get a start of their own at my expense?

Thanks!

Never heard of that but maybe something was after fertilizer or bone meal put in to amend the soil. Could it have been a cat using soft soil as it%26#039;s littler box?
Reply:probably a shrew-they like to dig under bushess %26amp; shrubs-especially newly planted-they eat worms-place a mouse trap near the hole and cover with a small clay-or plastic -pot-chances are you%26#039;ll catach em

Reply:I like to think the best of people so I doubt a neighbor would do this. If you used bone meal then it could be any number of creatures that dug in there for the bone meal, the missing plant may have just been drug off.
