I would like to reclassify the question of lilac walls and cream carpet?

What is the best color of leather couch for my living room. My leaving room is lilac and the carpet is cream. I want a cream couch, but my husband says it is too plain. He thinks black would look nice in the living room. Any ideas?

He%26#039;s right; either black or a sage green would look better.
Reply:Well, the lilac and the cream suggest a feminine bent to your room and you%26#039;re thinking of adding an uber-masculine leather sofa? I think the room is going to look off just from that aspect alone. I like the suggestion of something in sage green but I would stick to something other than leather. Even a microfiber would work better...
Reply:I would find a couch with a floral design with lilac colors in it and cream

If you get a cream couch it would be to blahh
Reply:Not black - too harsh a contrast.

Suggestions: [ leather ]

plum [ dramatic contrast ]

cream

sage green [ goes with almost every color! ]

medium gray

All with decorative pillows in plum, lilac, cream - crochet, embroidered, ruffled, needlepoint, etc.

Non- leather:

a print of stripe of lilac, cream, and sage green; with pillows in each of the colors.
Reply:I couldn%26#039;t go with lilac and black-it%26#039;s too 80%26#039;s lounge. Floral is well, floral. Sage is a nice color but there are so many variations-can you get fabric swatches and bring them to your home?
Reply:I would suggest something a little darker than cream, but black is way too extreme for the other colors in this room. It would stick out like a sore thumb. When you walk into a room, you want there to be a focal point. A view out the window, a fireplace, a beautiful painting on the wall, but not the couch. So, this is what I would suggest. Since your carpet is cream and your walls are lilac, I would recommend a fabric couch or microfiber couch. Both are comfortable to sit and relax on and not so harsh as leather is. You could go with either a blue couch, a beige couch or possibly a sage colored couch (depending on what shade lilac you have on your walls). Bring a paint sample with you to the furniture store to see how it looks when next to the sofa choices. Good Luck!
Reply:I would actually recommend an orange fabric couch, just to spice it up a little. Black is too extreme, yet cream is too plain. Orange has some red in it (and of course you know red is a major factor of purple). It is also made from yellow (obviously), which is close to cream.
Reply:I think black would be great...it doesn%26#039;t have to be leather (but can be if that%26#039;s what you%26#039;re into). Black would give a sharp, clean look to the room. You can girly the room up with your accent pieces. Think about it....adding brushed nickel accessories, sage throw would be nice draped over the end of the couch, simple floral arrangement, etc. It doesn%26#039;t have to feel cheap or too modern, you can definitely make it work for you.

If you don%26#039;t like black, a deep plum would look nice...sage is another option, but I%26#039;d probably lean towards using that more for accessories.

I%26#039;d be leery of going with a cream colored couch...too easy to stain and dirt/dust show tremendously. Even with easy to clean leather, it seems to age quicker....trust me, I have some cream leather chairs that I%26#039;ve hidden away due to them looking %26#039;less than pristine%26#039;. It might look chic and gorgeous for a year....less if you entertain a lot or have kids over!!!!!

A chocolate brown is another alternative that you can tie together with the colors, too. This color is pretty trendy right now, but will go with oh so much!

Personally, I%26#039;d lean toward the black or deep plum....
