What is the best way to transplant a Lilac Bush?

I had a big Lilac Bush that a friends gave me but most of it died except for a few little pieces. I cut the smaller pieces off the dead bush and placed them in water. It has been less than 24 hours since being placed in vases. Where do I go from here? What is my next step? Can I just place them in the ground or do they need to grow a few more roots on them? Thank you for any help anyone can give me...:)

I would expect the whole bush to die. If the pieces have any roots, you can plant and hope for the best. It is difficult to replant a large lilac and it is better to get some sprouts with roots and plant those.
